Research in Art is a community-based arts initiative started by Ottawa's Petra Halkes and Rene Price. Complete with salons, study groups, exhibitions and reading groups, RIA promotes dialogue about contemporary art.
As a part of the monthly RIA Salon series, I will showcase my recent research on the contemporary art world. My presentation, Enacting the institutional art world, will explore how artists and curators alike bring about the Canadian art world through their everyday work (and workplace writing) practices.
Drawing from my recent study, “Art working: An institutional ethnography of the art world,” I will explore the differences between experiential literacies—that tell individual experience—and institutional literacies—that organize the world through concepts (Darville, 1995, 2009). I will also invite dialogue about what it means—or perhaps what it takes—to bring about the institutional art world.
